| New VOSA roadside checks on HGV’s |
The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency has new powers (as of 28th May 2009) to issue fixed penalties to drivers whose vehicles fail to pass roadside checks. The aim of these new powers is improve road safety and to make HGV drivers accountable for the safety of their vehicles. |
| Previously only Police officers had the power to enforce these standards, however now that VOSA officers can also enforce the regulations; it is hoped that there will be an improvement in road safety for HGV’s. Crucially this will also help in regulating foreign drivers, who if they are unable to provide a UK address will be required to pay a roadside deposit. The officers enforcing the roadside checks will have the power to immobilise the vehicle, until a deposit is paid. |
