| Road side checks find over 70% of HGV loads unsafe |
During May 2009 several spot checks were conducted on HGV’s in a joint initiative between the Health and Safety Executive and VOSA. The results were that the majority of loads needed remedial action to make them safe for drivers and loading staff. |
The amount of Heavy Goods Vehicles which failed to pass the spot checks, surprised both organisations conducting the checks. These figures are all the more significant, when you taken into account the 2,000 injuries which have occurred in the last 3 years on UK roads, due to cargo falling from vehicles. |
As a result of these road side checks, the HSE will be launching a campaign to raise awareness and offer guidance in properly restraining loads. The aim of this campaign will be to reduce injuries both on the road and in the loading and unloading of Lorries. |
